SPEEDWAY LEGEND BARRY BRIGGS LAUNCHES HIS LATEST BOOK

Legendary motorcycle speedway racer Barry Briggs MBE is in the UK to promote his recently launched book ‘Wembley and Beyond’, a revealing story of the life and times of speedway’s most colourful superstar. With six successive British speedway titles and four World titles with his last individual Championship coming in 1966, Briggs is one of the most successful speedway riders in history, but it is his life beyond the race track which is the focus of his latest book and tells a story of adventure, courage and heartache. ‘Wembley and Beyond’ is not just the memoirs of a legendary speedway rider but also of a remarkable man.

From diamond mining in Africa, to looking down the barrel of an AK-47, Barry Briggs has experienced remarkable adventures that have often eclipsed his daring exploits on the race track. These adventures have earned and lost him $43 million in 24 hours, a son that faced paralysis, and the agonising experience of a wife dying of cancer. Barry’s life has crossed paths with legends of entertainment, Evel Knievel, and Steve McQueen who he taught to slide a motorbike and a special relationship with Bernie Ecclestone and the tail of how Barry almost became a promoter of an F1 event in Las Vegas.

As twice runner up for the coveted BBC Sports Personality of the Year award Barry has been at the forefront of the British sporting landscape and was awarded an MBE for his services to motorsport in 1973.

BMW MAKE HISTORIC RETURN TO THE ISLE OF MAN TT RACES

Having recently re-joined the International stage, German manufacturer BMW has wasted no time in tackling the biggest test of all with the announcement that an official manufacturer supported team will be contesting the Superbike and Senior Isle of Man TT Races in 2010, further increasing the number of manufacturers participating in this year’s event.

It was only 12 months ago that the Bavarian giant entered the World Superbike Championship for the first time but now, fresh from a stunning fifth place at last year’s Macau Grand Prix, German ace Rico Penzkofer will have a full Superbike-spec machine at his disposal for the two six-lap TT races. An official test rider for BMW, 34- year old Penzkofer has been part of the major development team of the S1000RR, a bike that has created headlines all over the world both for its design and performance.

It will be the first time since the late 70s that an official BMW team has contested the TT, when Helmut Dahne and Hans Otto Butenuth, both iconic riders from that era, raced on the Isle of Man.  BMW has recorded 30 TT wins since their debut in 1937, with the majority of those coming in the sidecar class that they once dominated.

Penzkofer, meanwhile, made a strong debut at the TT last year when he contested the two Supersport races.  He achieved a personal best lap of just under 120mph and left the Island with two bronze replicas. With a year’s experience around the Mountain Course, the Borna rider is sure to feature more prominently this year and the former World Endurance Championship race winner is relishing his return to the TT.

SUZUKI DOMINATES DAYTONA SUPERBIKE OPENER

Suzuki continued its tradition of owning the racetrack at the opening round of AMA American Superbike series in Daytona Beach, Florida with the GSX-R1000 taking seven of the top 10 spots overall after two days of racing.

National Guard Jordan Suzuki team rider Jake Zemke took first place in both 44-mile, 15-lap races and Tommy Hayden steered his Rockstar Makita Suzuki GSX-R1000 to second place in both races. On Friday, he and Zemke were only .009 seconds separated as they crossed the finish line.

Jordan Suzuki’s Aaron Yates took pole position after setting the quickest qualifying lap in the day leading up to the double header; ending up fourth overall at the end of the event, while Blake Young, in his second year with the Rockstar Makita team, took fifth overall after grabbing the holeshot in Thursday’s race and leading for a few laps.

The RoadRacingWorld.com Suzuki, with Chris Ulrich aboard, took sixth overall. Taylor Knapp and his RidersDiscount.com Suzuki took seventh, and Shane Narbonne finished ninth on his DASPerformance.com GSX-R1000.

In the 69th running of the legendary Daytona 200, Geico Powersports RMR Suzuki’s Danny Eslick raced his GSX-R600 to the pole position and won the Rolex award for fastest qualifier. Eslick battled through the cold and challenging 200-mile race and took fourth, as Vesrah Suzuki’s Cory West took sixth overall.

ROCZEN AND RAMON WIN HAWKSTONE INTERNATIONAL

A crisp and sunny afternoon in Shropshire, England, saw Suzuki take a double victory at the annual Hawkstone Park International; the third and final major pre-season meeting in Europe.

Rockstar Teka Suzuki World MX1’s Steve Ramon guided his works RM-Z450 to his first win of 2010 by going 3rd and 1st in the MX1 class while Teka Suzuki Europe World MX2’s Ken Roczen was clearly the fastest competitor in the MX2 division on his RM-Z250 and swept the day with 1-1 scores.

The dark sand of Hawkstone Park, long a traditional and favoured venue in motocross circles thanks to the technical nature of the terrain, proved once more to be a tough test for a select set of GP regulars. A surface partly frozen in places thawed to become rough, bumpy and demanding throughout the racing programme.

Ramon initially fought to cope with the grinds of the layout in the first moto and arm-pump caused him to slow his speed and take 3rd position. The 30-year-old Belgian altered the setting of his machine in-between the races and was suitably dialled into the track to improve his pace for the next outing. As in Valence two weeks ago, Ramon was a more reactive force, and after overtaking Max Nagl escaped to win and clinch the overall. He was 3rd in Superfinal that saw the MX2 and MX1 riders mixed together, but the result did not count towards the final classification.

Rockstar Teka Suzuki WMX1 will now cease competitive activity until the first Grand Prix of 15 in the 2010 world championship in Bulgaria on Easter weekend. The team will move to Italy two weeks before the trip to Eastern Europe to prepare for the hard-pack track that awaits them at Sevlievo. Teka Suzuki Europe World MX2 will open their national motocross commitments with the International at Frankenbach in Germany next weekend and the will return to the UK for the second round of the Maxxis British Championship at Mallory Park on March 21st.

SUCCESSFUL CARTAGENA TEST FOR GNS RACING

Fuchs Silkolene British Supersport Championship Team GNS Racing has concluded a successful outing at Cartagena with both Sam Lowes and Paul Jordan enjoying their first Spanish test of the season.

Both riders reported positivity with 19-year-old Lincoln rider Lowes lapping amongst the leading riders whilst 18-year-old Paul Jordan from Magherafelt in Northern Ireland got more laps under his belt to aid his transition to four-stroke racing as part of the Southampton-based team.

The next test at Guadix takes place on March 9th and 10th and the final test takes place with the official BSB test day at Brands Hatch on 17th March in readiness for the first race at Brands Hatch over Easter (April 3rd to 5th).

HARLEY-DAVIDSON CLINCHES CUSTOM MOTORCYCLE AWARDS

Harley-Davidson UK and Ireland is celebrating fantastic victories at the recent Ace Café London Motorcycle and Custom Show at Alexandra Palace. Two of the manufacturer’s authorised dealerships clinched five awards in the show, which is an affiliated event of the AMD Official World Championship of Custom Bike Building.

A major part of the Harley-Davidson® lifestyle involves customisation, so its dealerships’ participation in the event, which took place on 26-28 February was particularly apt. Harley-Davidson UK and Ireland sponsored the important Modified Harley-Davidson class at the show, and is an extension of its international backing for the Official World Championship programme. There are two types of custom building, one is from the ground up and the other is to modify a Harley Davidson, both give fantastic results.

Shaw Harley-Davidson scooped the prestigious first prize in the Modified Harley-Davidson class. Its entry ‘Strike True II’, will now go forward to compete in the World Championship of Custom Bike Building in Sturgis later this year. In addition, the Sussex-based dealership walked away with second and fourth places in the Modified Harley-Davidson class for its ‘Johnny Cash Get Rhythm’ and ‘Salt Flat’ entries.

Meanwhile, Warr’s Harley-Davidson won third prize in the Modified Harley-Davidson category for its entry ‘Twenty Four’, which is a modified version of the 2010 FLSTB Cross Bones motorcycle.

CHECK YOUR TYRE PRESSURES BEFORE YOUR FIRST SPRING RIDE

With spring finally heading our way, Avon Tyres is warning bikers across the UK to check their tyre pressures before they venture out onto the road.

Following one of the harshest winters for 30 years, many bikers will only now be considering returning to two wheels and the British-based motorcycle tyre specialist knows just how important running the correct pressures is to the safety and stability of a bike, thanks to a century of experience.

Peter McNally, Avon Tyre’s Technical Product Manager for motorcycle tyres said, “Tyre pressures on a motorcycle are critical to the safety of the rider – there’s no other way of putting it. The tyre’s connection with the road has to be perfect and if the tyre is underinflated after a winter’s lay-off, the bike will not handle properly and it could be dangerous.

“We know from testing our range of tyres – including our new Storm 2 Ultra sports-touring and VP2 Sports tyres – that it is critical to use the correct pressures. Using under-pressured tyres can degrade handling and affect steering, as well as leading to increased and uneven tyre wear.”

PRIME MINISTER ACKNOWLEDGES IMPORTANCE OF MOTORCYCLING IN THE UK

The House of Commons heard Gordon Brown announce: “It is important that we have a strong motorcycling industry in this country.”

As an industry that directly employs 62,000 people and contributes significant gross added value of £2.7 billion, the Motor Cycle Industry Association (MCIA) is delighted to hear this public support from the Prime Minister.

During Prime Minister’s Questions Mr Brown was quizzed by the Conservative MP for St Albans, Anne Main. She asked him specifically about the issue of motorcycle testing, which has been fundamentally changed since the introduction of European legislation in October 2008.

Anne Main highlighted to Mr Brown the drastic effects the last piece of European legislation has had on the industry since the changes came into effect. Main revealed that there has been a 62% decline in the number of tests taken since the introduction of the multi-purpose test centres which saw the number of bike test centres drop massively from over 200 to around 60.

Mr Brown commented on the importance of ensuring that the specific questions raised by Anne Main MP on tests be answered and assured the House that the Transport Minister would look at the reported figures.

The MCI looks forward to hearing the further responses on this issue and its political lobbying team will continue to work diligently for the benefit of the whole UK motorcycle industry. With a further piece of European legislation due to be implemented in 2013 it is vital that the motorcycle industry as a whole unites with one voice to work with the Government to help ensure smooth implementation of the Directive and to minimise any possible negative outcomes for the UK.

Steve Kenward MCIAs CEO said: “The MCI is pleased to hear the motorcycle industry is getting its much needed recognition from the highest quarters. We work tirelessly with Government to create an environment in which motorcycling can flourish and welcome the Prime Minister’s support.

“The MCI’s political lobbying is fundamentally important to its activities and it hopes this positive announcement will pave the way for greater Government support and understanding of the critical issues that we need to manage to ensure the growth and sustainability of this financially important industry.”

SUZUKI MEN ON TOP AT BRITISH ENDURO OPENER

Suzuki’s Tom Sagar and Paul Edmondson climbed to the top of their respective podiums as they won a class each at the opening round of the Metzeler British Enduro Championship at Thetford Forest in Norfolk.

In E2, Putoline Suzuki by www.fasteddyracing.com rider Sagar took his RMX450Z to victory in its very first British championship event and only dropped down the overall standings after a big crash in a special test.

Winning his class and finishing fifth overall in the standings, Sagar was upbeat about his day. He said: “Naturally I'm over the moon to take the win in E2. The bike ran extremely well and despite the wet conditions was a joy to ride. The crash was a bit of a blow for my overall finish, but I'm not too disappointed by this, as I think we've shown our potential for the rest of the season."

With Edmondson contesting the new RM-Z250 in E1, he too was in blistering form, beating rivals much younger than himself to the win in the E1 class and crucially finishing second overall to E3 winner David Knight.

HASLAM WINS FIRST WORLD SUPERBIKE RACE

Team Suzuki Alstare rider Leon Haslam recorded his first ever World Superbike win in the first race of this year’s Superbike World Championship at Phillip Island.

He led the race from start to finish and took the flag, just 4000ths-of-a-second ahead of Michel Fabrizio (Ducati). He and his Suzuki Alstare team mate Sylvain Guintoli then disputed the lead for most of the second race, but Haslam’s dreams of a double were dashed right at the death by Spaniard Carlos Checa (Ducati). Nevertheless, his tremendous win in race one and runner-up spot in the second puts him on the very top of the Superbike World Championship, nine points ahead of his nearest rival.

Also encouraging for the team was Guintoli’s ability to run at the front and be in contention: The Frenchman led his team mate eight laps out of 22 and did not look out of place at all. This was his first race of the year, on the new 2010 GSX-R1000 bike, with a new team, but he also showed that he too will be a force to be reckoned with this year. Although he missed out on the podium, he did receive a trophy - for the fastest lap of race two - so he did not leave Phillip Island empty handed.

LAVERTY AND PARKALGAR HONDA LEAD THE WORLD

Eugene Laverty led from start to finish to convincingly win a re-started opening round of the World Supersport Championship at Phillip Island in Australia with team-mate Miguel Praia taking an excellent career-best equalling ninth for the Parkalgar Honda team.

Parkalgar Honda goes home for round two of the Championship to the Parkalgar circuit in Portugal in one month’s time on March 28th.

CW RACING ATTACK ROADS AND CIRCUITS IN 2010

The 2010 Motorcycle racing season will see a new race team on the grid at Irish Championship events. The newly formed CW Racing Team will consist of owner/racer Coyles Wright a 37 year old ADT Fire and Security, CCTV Engineer from Bushmills and 28 year old racer Michael McKinley from Ballynure.

Wright will concentrate his efforts between the hedges racing a Suzuki GSXR1000 and a 'Super Twin' at all Ulster Centre Road races, the NW200 and Ulster GP, Kells and Killalane, as well as taking in some ISB short circuit races. Coyles, whose best result to date is a 2nd place finish at the 2008 Killalane Road races, has numerous top ten finishes on the roads and is usually around the top six in the Supertwins class when he takes in a short circuit race meeting.

Michael McKinley will compete on Coyles' Suzuki GSXR600 on the Irish short circuits riding in both the Bridgestone Tyres Irish Clubmans Championship and the Irish Supersport 600 championship. This will see a change of class for Michael who finished 2nd overall in the 2009 Supersport 400 Ulster Championship and 3rd overall in the 2009 Irish Supersport 400 championship, despite missing quite a few races.

Both Coyles and Michael have raced under the McKillop Motorcycles banner in previous seasons and struck up a good friendship during that time, however come the end of the 2009 season Michael had decided retirement from the sport was the only option left open to him due to a severe lack of funds.

MSS COLCHESTER KAWASAKI SUPPORTS JUNIOR SUPERSTOCK CHAMPIONSHIP

MSS Colchester Kawasaki will be further adding to their stable of riders for 2010, with Danny Buchan riding in the Metzeler Junior Superstock Championship.

The ambitious young Essex rider, who has just turned 16, is looking to graduate from his Kawasaki ZXR400 to the impressive Ninja ZX-6R, after a three day test on Cartagena, Spain.

Danny, from Burnham-On-Crouch, entered a one-off Junior Superstock race at Brands Hatch, finishing a creditable 11th at his first attempt on a 600cc machine. A multi-champion in Junior Motocross, Danny said, “It’s exciting to be part of the MSS set-up and get a bit of direction from Nick. Brands Hatch is my favourite circuit so I can’t wait for the start of the season!”

In an ambitious plan of attack, the MSS Colchester Kawasaki squad will field top riders in British Superbike, British Supersport, National Superstock, Junior Superstock plus the Isle of Man and associated ‘roads’ events. Kawasaki has great pedigree in the Junior Superstock class with 2009 Champion Jamie Hamilton taking the series trophy on his stock Kawasaki Ninja ZX-6R. MSS Colchester Kawasaki will be supporting Jamie as he graduates to the Supersport class for 2010.

NEW HARE & HOUNDS XC SERIES FOR 2010

ACU Events along with Rideoffroaduk are bucking the downturn and investing in grassroots off-road sport by starting a new introductory Hare & Hounds XC series to run over three events in 2010, with the emphasis on fun riding.

Specifically aimed at new, clubman, veteran, female or fun riders, the XC series will be a fantastic platform for enthusiasts or riders wanting to try out enduro sport as it will visit some of the very best venues in the UK.

The series starts at the nostalgic Norwood Teversal venue in Nottinghamshire on April 11th. Norwood was the place where televised scrambles took place back in the 1960s and is littered with history. Round 2 takes place on July 18th at the stunning Lee Dell near Rochdale which offers acres of open going in a hidden valley strewn with old mill ruins. The final round will take place on September 19th at a new venue in Lincolnshire.

THE UK’S BIGGEST ORGANISER OF OFF ROAD MOTORCYCLE SPORT TAKES CONTROL OF MOTOCROSS TRACK

The ACU, National Governing Body of motorcycle sport and the country’s biggest organiser of off road motorcycle competition, has become the proud leaseholder of an established Northamptonshire motocross track

Milton Malsor MX track is situated three-miles south of Northampton and sits right next to the northbound carriageway of the M1 motorway. Well used and much loved, the track is a favourite amongst midlands motocross riders and has been used for both practice and racing on a regular basis over the past 24 years.

Milton Malsor motocross track will now not only become the venue for much more ACU motocross activity, but also, importantly, the home of an ACU ‘Centre of Excellence’ for youth motocross.

Additionally, through its work with the ACU Local Authority Support Unit, the ACU has become increasingly aware of the value of motocross as a ‘re-engagement’ tool for young people who find themselves socially or educationally excluded. The ACU intends to explore opportunities to allow use of the track by local motor projects and social projects, as a social inclusion tool, to give young people legal off road riding opportunities.

The track’s current owner, Bob Jones, a lifelong motocross fan and active member of the South Midland Centre of the ACU, is pleased to see the track pass into the hands of the Governing Body.

“I’ve nurtured motocross at my track for over 20 years and seen the venue evolve into part of the local community. The riders love it and I want that to continue. I’m convinced this new deal with the ACU is the best thing that could happen to the track and I’m sure that the ACU will invest in the facility to take on to a whole new level,” said Jones.

FIRST TEST A SUCCESS FOR GNS RACING

GNS Racing has begun their preparations for the 2010 Fuchs-Silkolene British Supersport Championship season with Sam Lowes and Paul Jordan on track at Brands Hatch.

The Southampton-based team took advantage of the track time and working together for the first time, and completed the shake-down test in wet conditions, but both reigning Supersport Cup champion Lowes and Supersport rookie Jordan were feeling positive at the end of the day.

Sam Lowes, #11 Team Rider: "It was great to be back on the bike again. In the morning we managed to get a handful of laps with little traffic and it felt good and I already feel at home with the team. In the afternoon we were able to get some laps together and we were definitely improving. The conditions weren't ideal but it was good to get out there so we are ready for the next test in Spain."

Paul Jordan, #61 Team Rider: “After racing a 125, it was great to take the 600cc machine out on track and although conditions were difficult, I soon got to grips with the bike. Sam is helping me no end and can’t wait to get some dry track time and hopefully our next test in Spain will provide that.”

Brands Hatch hosts the opening round of the 2010 MCE Insurance British Superbike Championship on Easter weekend (2/3/4/5 April).

APRILIA AND GR MOTORSPORT TAKE KARL HARRIS TO NATIONAL SUPERSTOCK

It is ten years since GR Motosport and Karl Harris won the first ever European Superstock title and now Karl is back with the team running the official Aprilia effort in the Metzeler National Superstock 1000 Championship this year.

The Aprilia RSV4 arrived with great pedigree and expectation onto the world scene last year. The press built the picture and in the hands of Max Biaggi in WSB the RSV4 started to fulfil those dreams. Great results in FIM Superstock proved the RSV4’s all-round pedigree.

Karl Harris: “1998 was a difficult year for me as was last year! I joined Brent and Tony back then we had fun and won. I’m back with GR now and on the Aprilia RSV4, I know it’s going to be good!”

THIRD PLACE FOR LAMPKIN IN ENDURO

Dougie Lampkin followed up his recent victory at Hell's Gate with a solid third place at the Tough One Extreme Enduro held near Oswestry in wintry conditions. Still very much 'the new kid on the block' in these type of specialist competitions, Dougie once again showed that his two wheel skill from his trials background enabled him to record yet another podium result against World class and much more experienced opposition.

MOTOCZYSZ CONFIRM PARTICIPATION IN 2010 TT ZERO RACE ON THE ISLE OF MAN

MotoCzysz, the motorcycle team founded by designer Michael Czysz, has confirmed that they will be returning to the Isle of Man in 2010 to participate in the ‘TT Zero’ Clean Emissions race which is part of the iconic TT races.

Their MotoCzysz E1pc electric motorcycle generated a huge amount of interest during the inaugural event in 2009 and was widely accepted as having a similar level of integration as a traditional race bike.  The story of the team’s 2009 Isle of Man campaign is heavily featured in the documentary ‘Charge’ shot by director Mark Neale, which will be on general release worldwide in cinemas in summer 2010.

The team, based in Portland, Oregon in the United States is famous for developing a true innovative clean sheet motorcycle, the C1 990 race bike.  They were scheduled to compete with their conventional race bike in the Moto GP championship until a change of regulation meant that the bike was no longer eligible.

The team’s 2010 electric machine is already believed to have received significant improvements on their 2009 bike and they have confirmed that they will debut the new MotoCzysz proprietary electric motor controller drive system, which is expected to be the highest torque/density electric motor in the industry.  They are expected to be one of the leading contenders to claim the £10,000 prize that the Isle of Man Government has offered to the first team to record a 100mph average time for a lap of the 37.75 mile course by an electric motorcycle.

NEW SPONSOR FOR ALSTARE SUZUKI

Team Suzuki Alstare has signed an agreement with a new sponsor, Viru, for the 2010 World Superbike Championship. Viru is an Estonian beer and is distributed by the Italian company Biscaldi Group, with whom Alstare has worked with on many SBK operations in recent years.

Viru is a fresh-tasting 5% Pilsner beer and is produced in a unique octahedral shaped bottle, whose design is said to be based on the famous churches and towers of old Tallin, Estonia’s capital. The beer is made from highest quality barley from the pure grain fields of Lithuania and hops from the Czech Republic in the university town of Tartu.

Pietro Biscaldi from the Biscaldi Group said: “We are very happy to be involved with Team Suzuki Alstare because they are such an important team in the Superbike World Championship. We are looking forward to supporting them and fighting for the title this year.”

MARC VDS RACING TEAM CONCLUDE SUCCESSFUL FIRST TEST

The Marc VDS Racing Team left the Montmelo circuit in Barcelona satisfied with the progress made by Scott Redding and Vincent Lonbois during their first Moto2 test, despite rain causing disruptions to the test schedule on two of the three days.

Overnight rain meant that testing was delayed on day one, when a dry line finally started to appear around the 4.727km- Montmelo circuit. Both Redding and Lonbois continued to refine the set-up of their Suter MMX machines, a process that they started during the much better conditions on day two.

Changes to the suspension settings on Redding’s bike did lead to a reduction in the chatter, but also to a corresponding reduction in rear grip. Despite this, and the less than ideal track conditions, Redding signed off from his first test for the Marc VDS Racing Team with his fastest time, posting a 1'51.1s lap shortly before rain brought the test to an end.

For Lonbois it was all about continuing his familiarisation with both the Suter MMX Moto2 bike and the Dunlop tyres. The 19-year-old Belgian rider pushed hard during the limited track time in a bid to better understand the limits of both the bike and the tyres. As a result, Lonbois heads for the next test in Valencia confident of closing on the lap times of his more experienced team-mate.

The next test for the Marc VDS Racing Team will take place from 1-3 March at Valencia, where the team will be issued with the official Honda race engines for the first time.

LEOVINCE CONFIRM 2010 DEAL WITH TECH 3 YAMAHA

The Italian masters of performance, LeoVince exhausts, have confirmed a 2010 sponsorship deal with Tech 3 Yamaha team.  The bikes were given their first shakedown recently at the Sepang circuit, and can now be seen in this season's final livery in distinctive glossy black, complete with LeoVince yellow flashes.

LeoVince marketing manager, Fabio Mozzone, said: "The Tech 3 team have a promising season ahead, especially with high calibre riders like Ben Spies and Colin Edwards racing. We have a good association with Herve Poncharal’s team, they work very hard, and are very committed, and we believe the team now has the potential to succeed this year.  We look forward to many podiums!"

The Tech 3 Yamaha team are serious contenders in MotoGP.  Having started in 1989 by Herve Poncharal, the team began contesting the 250 World Championship, then onto the YZR500's in 2001 with Olivier Jacques and Shinya Nakano, and finally moved up to four-stroke YZR-M1's from 2002.  For the 2010 season the Tech 3 team have 2 of the best riders in the world, Ben Spies and Colin Edwards, both from USA.

Colin Edwards achieved a very worthy 5th place in the 2009 MotoGP championship with the Tech 3 Yamaha team, plus his 1st pole position in the China GP.

Ben Spies, at just 25 years old, won the 2009 FIM World Superbike Championship, with the Yamaha factory team. Previously he had enjoyed enormous success in the AMA Championships in the USA, winning the series 3 years running from 2006-08.  For 2010 he has replaced the outgoing British favourite James Toseland.

LeoVince have been at the forefront of racing for many years, with development, technical support and sponsorship in MotoGP, World Superbike, World Supersport, BSB and international Road Racing.  Every LeoVince race and road exhaust incorporates technical solutions derived from the top race teams on the racetrack.

HONDA TRANSALP CHOSEN FOR CELEBRITY 7,000 MILE CHARITY CHALLENGE

Actor Danny John-Jules, who plays The Cat in cult classic TV series Red Dwarf, and endurance rider Graham Hoskins, are to undertake a gruelling ‘Iron Butts’ Challenge in aid of Sport Relief, with the Honda Transalp as their chosen two-wheel companion.

The 7,000-mile ride will see the intrepid pair take in three continents and fourteen countries in just fifteen days – from 27 February to 14 March - circumnavigating the Mediterranean and passing through dramatic landscapes as they cross from Europe, into Africa, through the Middle East into Turkey and back to the UK.  They will cover 480 miles on their shortest day and 630 miles on their longest – not a trip for the faint hearted!

In preparation for their challenge, John-Jules and Hoskins visited Honda’s acclaimed training Institute for some hands-on familiarisation with their Transalps and, a rudimentary introduction to motorcycle mechanics with one of Honda’s expert Master Technicians!

Hoskins, the man behind the creation of the Iron Butts Med Circle Challenge, is no stranger to motorcycling adventures. Since fighting his battle with cancer, he has undertaken a number of epic charity motorbike rides, including a 4,000 mile round trip in six days from London to Moscow in aid of the 2005 Children in Need appeal. 49 year-old Danny John-Jules is best known for his comic role in the classic hit TV show Red Dwarf, which is as popular as ever with a new series being filmed later this year.

The pair will set off on their Honda Transalps from Alexandra Palace in North London on Saturday 27 February, during the 2010 Motorcycle Show being held at the venue.

To follow their progress, where both Danny and Graham will post a series of blogs and images from their amazing adventure, visit www.ironbutts.co.uk. You can also support this dynamic duo by sponsoring them at uk.virginmoneygiving.com/ironbutts.

Sagar said: "It was a pretty tough event but the bike ran perfectly and we were able to keep up a fast pace despite the boggy conditions. ELLISON FIRED UP AFTER SIGNING FOR SWAN HONDA

Swan Honda has confirmed their completed line-up for the 2010 MCE Insurance British Superbike Championship with James Ellison joining Stuart Easton to form one of the strongest teams on the grid in a bid to secure a maiden BSB title.

Ellison returns to the team focused and determined after finishing runner-up in 2009 following weeks of uncertainty over his BSB return when he was left without a ride. However, Swan Honda seized the chance to re-sign the Kendal rider who last rode for the team during the 2008 season. Ellison was the most consistent title contender in 2009 and was the only rider to score points in each of the 26 races taking 14 podium finishes, with four of those race victories.

Ellison said: "I’m so grateful to Shaun Muir and SMR for giving me the opportunity to race in BSB this year. I know the whole Swan Honda team have pulled out all the stops to give me this chance to fight for the title. It’s been a very difficult winter not knowing if I would be racing, as I was left in a really difficult position at the end of 2009. I knew that if I had any chance of winning the championship it was with this team, so my first phone call was to Shaun when I was left without a ride.”

Team Owner Shaun Muir concluded: “To say I am delighted to have James back on board is an understatement. We were disappointed to lose him at the end of 2008, but James is determined and passionate about his racing and took his best opportunity at that time. He left us on good terms and for that reason have held him in high regard. He brings a real hunger and desire to challenge for the title and I have no doubts that Stuart and James will bring the best out of each other. I am sure that it is going to be a great first year for Swan Honda.”

INTO THE UNKNOWN WITH GLOBEBUSTERS

How would you like to spend a few days riding your motorcycle along the Afghan border?  Will the Chinese let a foreign registered bike into Tibet? Can you really ride a bike all the way to Everest Base Camp?  Will your bike run if it’s at almost 18,000 feet altitude?

If it sounds like all the ingredients of an extreme motorcycle adventure, then that’s because it is and it’s all played out in the new DVD just released by global motorcycle adventure specialists, GlobeBusters.

“Riding Asia – London to Beijing” chronicles the three month journey by the GlobeBusters co-founders, Guinness World Record Holders, Kevin and Julia Sanders, who set out from the UK, riding across Europe, Turkey and into Central Asia, before traversing the whole of China from West to East.  Somehow the pair even got permission from the Chinese to ride their personal bikes across Tibet, including Everest Base Camp.

Motorcyclist or not, anyone with a penchant for travel and a spirit of adventure will find this DVD a compelling piece of film.  With a “warts and all” coverage of life on the road, the GlobeBusters duo head into the unknown following a remote overland route that only a handful may have ever achieved using their own vehicle, if any at all.

SUPERMOTO BOOSTED BY ACU AND NORASPORT AGREEMENT

An agreement has been reached between the ACU and Norasport to run the British and National Supermoto Championships for the next five years.

The merger is seen as a break-through in moving forward this exciting discipline of motorcycling competition.

Talks with interested parties for the Championship titles are ongoing, and the early response is encouraging. Matters are quickly moving into place for an exciting 2010 Championship series for both British and National contenders of Supermoto.

Frank Carter, Hon. Deputy Chairman of the ACU said: “We now have in place a solid structure consolidating the major players for the next five-years to enable riders, team managers, sponsors and the all important manufacturers to see a clear way forward and get behind this new venture to secure the longer term future of our sport.”

HONDA MOTORCYCLES VOTED BEST BUILT BIKES

Honda has once again dominated a motorcycle rider survey – this time to find the UK’s best-built motorcycles – with Honda machines taking the first eight positions in the top ten.

In first place was the Honda CBR600RR from ’03-on with a build-quality satisfaction rating of 93%, while second was the CBR1100XX Super Blackbird (’97-on), heralded the ultimate sports-tourer of its day. The legendary VFR800 (’98-‘01) and VFR800 V-TEC (’01-on) took third and fourth places respectively and both achieved 91% build quality satisfaction. Fifth place was scooped by the legendary Fireblade, but in its initial 900cc model guises from ’92-’03, with the 1000cc Fireblade from ’04 onwards placed next in sixth. The much-loved and versatile CB600F Hornet (’98-’06 model) followed in seventh with an 88% rating and the CBR600F model rounded off the Honda strong-hold in eighth for the ’00-’07 model, also having an 88% build quality review.

The Motor Cycle News reader surveys regularly question more than 12,000 readers as part of its ‘MCN Biking Britain Survey’. A total of 1.5 million questions have been answered in total since the surveys began, with each reader answering 100 questions about their motorcycle covering such diverse characteristics as rider comfort, build quality, reliability, handling, as well as style, running costs, engine and braking performance.

This survey success echoes the recent victory for the CBR600F/RR in the British Dealer News Industry Awards, where the venerable machine scooped ‘Used Machine of 2009’ - as voted for by more than 500 motorcycle dealers around the UK - as well as backing up Honda machines recently being voted a staggering 25 out of the top 100 ‘best bikes’ by UK motorcyclists.

The Craig Jones Arai Sponsorship Award

Phoenix, the UK importer of Arai helmets, are proud to announce that the Craig Jones Arai Sponsorship Award has been presented to 16 year-old British 125GP Championship contender Deane Brown.

The Arai Sponsorship Award, which comprises helmets and race support for a full season, is now in its second year and is dedicated to the memory of Craig, one the UK’s finest and most talented racers of the last decade. Inaugurated by Craig’s parents Steve and Yvonne, the award is given annually to a deserving young rider of their choice in order to offer support and give a foot on the rung of the sponsorship ladder. Presented by Steve and Phoenix Distribution’s Managing Director, John Wakefield, at the International Motorcycle Show in December 2009, Steve commented; “Giving this to Deane, in Craig’s name, means so much to us and we know it would to him as he was a great fan of young racing talent.”

Deane Brown thoroughly deserves the recognition, having started his racing career in 2001 on Minimotos, cleaning up various championships along the way to gaining a place in the 2007 Red Bull Rookies’ Cup, where he earned 7th overall by the end of the season, and a place the following year. Both 2008 and 2009 had their fair share of highs and lows but finishing 9th in the British 125GP Championship (2nd in the under-16 Cup) despite injuries early season speaks volumes of his ability, desire and determination.

He was suitably pleased on receiving the Award; “It will be an honour to wear Arai in memory of Craig, as he had a big influence on me at the start of my big bike career. I’ll wear it with pride and my helmet will show Craig’s racing number – 18 – on each side. I can’t thank, Steve and Yvonne and Arai enough.”

Last year’s recipient, seven year-old Minimoto star Jay Niven, had a great 2009 season finishing 3rd in the SMC Junior ‘A’ Championship and Arai’s support for him will continue in 2010. Deane Brown will contest the 2010 British 125GP Championship on his Appleyard/Macadam Racing Seel machine – for more details visit www.deanebrownracing.co.uk

SUZUKI ANNOUNCES CONTINUED RIZLA MOTOGP PARTNERSHIP

Suzuki Motor Corporation is pleased to announce a further two-year agreement with ITL (Imperial Tobacco Limited) which will see the Suzuki MotoGP team continue to carry the Rizla brand on its GSV-R in the premier class of motorcycling racing.

Rizla became the title sponsor of Suzuki’s MotoGP team in 2006 and the announcement of a further extension to the partnership will mean the Suzuki GSV-R will compete in the MotoGP World Championship in the now famous ‘Rizla Blue’ until at least 2011.

Rizla is the world’s premier brand of rolling papers and has had a racing association with Suzuki since the 1980’s in Grand Prix, including Suzuki legend Kevin Schwantz rolling out on his GP debut on a Rizla-backed RG500 in 1986.

Loris Capirossi and new-signing Álvaro Bautista will be in action on their Rizla Suzukis at the first test of 2010 at Sepang in Malaysia this week, with the 18-race season scheduled to get underway beneath the lights of Losail in Qatar on Sunday 11th April.

2009 MARSHAL OF THE YEAR AWARD

“Lockton Award for Outstanding Contribution to ACU Motorcycle Marshalling”.

The ACU are pleased to announce that the winner of the 2009 Marshal of the Year Award is Derek Archer. Derek is a very dedicated marshal who, like many other marshals, volunteers his free time to help support British Motorcycle Sport at both Club and National events.

In choosing this year’s winner the judging panel were hoping to find someone who has gone that ‘extra mile’ in their service to the sport. The thing that caught the judges’ eyes was the fact that, despite being without his own transport, Derek regularly travels by train or bus to events all over the country, completing the final leg of his journey, often in our appalling British weather conditions, by foot.

The award will be presented to Derek at the ACU Awards Presentation on 30th January 2010 at the Park Inn Hotel, Northampton. Derek will also receive two complimentary tickets for the 2010 Moto GP Round at Assen and £500 spending money.

The ACU would like to thank Lockton International for their continued support and all Road Race Clubs who submitted their nominations. For further information regarding Marshalling please contact Michelle Haynes on 01788 566405 or e-mail michelle@acu.org.uk

UNDER 23 ENDURO AWARD

The ACU Trials and Enduro Committee have confirmed details of a new initiative for Under 23 riders in the 2010 Metzeler ACU Enduro Championship.

For the 2010 Championship series, points will be awarded to the U23 riders in the order they finish in the Overall positions of the Championship class. In the final classification, the best U23 rider (Under 23 on Jan 1st in the year of the competition) will be awarded the title British Junior Enduro Champion.

In line with the other Championship classes, at the conclusion of the series the points scored by each rider in all days held less 2 (which do not have to be from same event) will be used to calculate the final positions.

CRAIG JONES TO RIDE KAWASAKI

Renowned stunt rider and multiple world record holder, Craig Jones, has announced that he is to switch to Kawasaki machinery for his displays and motorcycle control skills academy for 2010.

Jones has never had an official association with a Japanese manufacturer before and, with his trademark enthusiasm, is looking forward to the season ahead.

“That new Z1000 is one bad boy and I’m just itching to get some miles under my wheels and start working on a routine that displays its awesome abilities to the full”, said the 41 year Midlander

In addition to the Z1000, Jones will have an impressive stable of Kawasaki machinery to call on, whether he is performing at one of any number of shows and events in the UK and Europe, or for use in his punishing daily training regime.

“I’ve got some big plans for the ER-6n. I’m going to transform it into my main tricks bike and, like everything I do, this season’s show is going to bigger, better and have an even greater wow factor”.

Of course if biggest is best, Jones can’t hide the fact that he’s built quite a reputation with large capacity V-Twins, so what better than an impressive VN1700 Classic to add some contrast?

“I’m not going to say too much at this stage but, rest assured, jaws are going to be dropping when people see what tricks I’ll be doing on this beast”.

CADWELL PARK CARRIES OUT MAJOR BARN CORNER DEVELOPMENT PROJECT

MotorSport Vision has completed a major circuit improvement project at Cadwell Park, extending the run-off area at Barn Corner to provide increased safety for competitors and trackday participants using the Lincolnshire circuit.

Ahead of its busiest ever season in 2010, which will feature two rounds of the MCE British Superbike Championship, Cadwell Park staff and specialist contractors GBM have realigned the barrier along an 80 metre stretch on the exit of Barn Corner, increasing the run-off width at the edge of the circuit beyond the exit of Barn corner from one metre to five metres to provide a uniform depth.

The project was particularly difficult because the barrier’s previous position had been constrained by the presence of a lake beyond it, preventing further displacement.  A major ground works project involved filling in a large part of the lake with 4200 tonnes of material, which needed to be virgin soil to avoid any environmental impact, and then building this up to track level.  The Armco barrier was then removed and re-installed on the newly reclaimed ground.

The increased run-off area will offer greater protection for riders and drivers at that part of the circuit, and changes to the area will also provide better views of Barn Corner for fans from nearby spectator banking.

Brands Hatch honours local motorcycling legend
Final parade lap for vintage racer Freddie Cooper

Brands Hatch paid tribute to local motorcycle racer and engine tuner Freddie Cooper today (Friday 29 January) as the 84-year-old received a final lap of honour around his home circuit on the way to his funeral.

Meopham-based Cooper, who sadly passed away earlier this month, was a cornerstone of the vintage motorcycle racing community and began his career competing at Brands Hatch in the 1950s, racing against famous names such as John Surtees.

Stuart Cooper, son of the late Freddie Cooper, said: "Fred used to ride to Brands Hatch on his bike and race all day, hoping not to drop it as he had to ride his bike home again! One time at the circuit he even loaned a part from his motorcycle engine to Stirling Moss, and Stirling lent him his crash helmet in return."

Cooper's main racing success came in the 1960s, when he fought against George Brown and Alfie Hagon on a 500cc supercharged Hermes Triumph sprinter.

During this time, he also established a successful motorcycle mechanic shop and became known for his engine tuning skills. In the mid 1960s, Motorcycle News challenged Freddie to build a race bike for under £100 to compete in the Isle of Man TT, which was eventually ridden by eminent journalist Robin Miller.

Perhaps Cooper's greatest motorcycling achievement occurred in 1972, when he became the first person in the UK to officially exceed 200mph, riding a twin engine supercharged Triumph Cyclotron that he built himself with help from his brother Jack.

Although Triumphs were his first love, Freddie was also a Lamborghini engine specialist and worked with Bernie Ecclestone in the 1970s, helping to build his Brabham Formula One engines.

Stuart Cooper, who is also a sidecar racer, added: "Fred's likeability, friendliness, his extreme knowledge and talent will be sadly missed by all of those who had the pleasure of knowing and working with him.”

REA HEADS BRITISH SUPREMACY AT PORTIMAO

Jonathan Rea powered to the best time at the end of the three-day Infront Motor Sports official Superbike test session at Portimao in Portugal. The Northern Ireland youngster’s time of 1 minute 42.270 seconds was quicker even than Ben Spies’ 2009 pole mark for Yamaha.

The battle between Rea and his fellow-Brit Leon Haslam, who had been quickest on day 1, continued right until the very end, the Suzuki Alstare man ending up three-tenths behind. British rider domination continued with Shane Byrne taking his private Althea Ducati 1098 to third place in the timesheets, and with Cal Crutchlow, one of Yamaha Sterilgarda’s two new 2010 signings, in fourth.

PROGRESS FOR VERMEULEN AND SYKES AT PORTIMAO

Kawasaki Superbike Racing Team riders Chris Vermeulen and Tom Sykes had a chance to ride their www.supercasino.com, Kick Energy, Vent-Axia and Henleys-backed Kawasaki Ninja ZX-10R machines alongside many of their rivals during the first official tests of 2010, at Portimao.

The three-day test was often affected by adverse weather conditions, with the first day proving dry and sunny, then the second one was wet to start and the track never quite dried out. The final day eventually offered a dry track surface, but the early sessions had been still damp from the previous day's rain.

With some of the team's testing plans interrupted by the constant changes in track grip, both Chris and Tom still got a chance to try out their latest Showa suspension developments, and felt an improvement. In terms of lap times Chris set a best of 1:44.108 on the final day, with Tom just behind on a 1:44.365. These times put them 14th and 15th respectively in the final rankings, with Jonathan Rea fastest, on a 1:42.270.

There will be one more major pre-season test for all the top riders in WSB, at Phillip Island on 21st and 22nd February, shortly before the first round in Chris' native Australia, on 28th February.

POTHOLES: A ‘HOLE’ LOT OF TROUBLE, SAYS IAM

With potholes estimated to cost motorists £320 million every year, and more potholes than ever appearing with the thaw of the recent cold-snap, the IAM (Institute of Advanced Motorists) has issued advice on how to deal with them.

Neil Greig, IAM Director of Policy and Research, said: “Potholes form and get worse after icy spells as water gets into small cracks in the roads, expanding as it freezes and forcing the tarmac apart. For this reason, roads will increasingly start to show signs of damage as the weather warms up. As well as worrying about your vehicle, with potholes being a major cause of suspension failure, drivers should be particularly conscious of cyclists and motorcyclists trying to get past a pothole and give them a wide berth. They are entitled to a wobble and would appreciate not having a motorist attempting to overtake just as they avoid a hole in the road,” added Mr Greig.

GINO REA PRE-SEASON TRAINING WITH BSB CHAMP LEON CAMIER

European Superstock 600cc Champion Gino Rea and BSB Champ Leon Camier have been making the most out of the good weather in Spain.

Like the beginning of 2009, Rea has been pre-season training in Spain since early January. The newly crowned European Superstock 600 Champion drove over with BSB Champion Leon Camier to avoid the British weather conditions. Starting off in the south of Spain near Murcia, cycling up to 4 hours a day with some motocross training, Gino then continued his training and stayed further north at Lloret de Mar while Leon headed back home to get ready for testing.

Rea said: “The weather’s been nice here in Spain only with an odd day of rain. We have been hard at work and cycled around 220km in just the first two days when we arrived and have been clocking up the miles since. Along with some good motocross sessions, we also have done 1000 press ups and 1000 sits ups in a day.”

THE NAME GAME – INSURANCE FOR BARGAIN BIKES

There’s no disputing that the recession has sent commuters scurrying around looking for cheaper ways to get to work. Motorbikes offer a great way to cut down commuting costs and even, in some cases, reduce travelling time if traffic is heavy. They are cheaper on fuel, cheaper to tax and cheaper to buy than a car.

So what’s the problem? In a word – insurance. Many companies don’t like to insure cheap imported motorcycles. Some new marques are unknown in the UK, or are even re-badged, so there are no Association of British Insurers (ABI) rates to guide would-be insurers. Bikesure, the specialist motorbiking arm of Adrian Flux Insurance Services, has no qualms about arranging cover for these unknown road bikes.

“We want to make it possible for people to keep their costs down,” explains Rob Balls of Bikesure. “If that means arranging insurance for a weird make of bike then we’ll do it. All we need is for the customer to let us know the specifications of the machine or direct us to a website and we’ll do the rest.”

Now with Bikesure arranging insurance for these models it means they can become a real commuting option. Bikesure also advises virgin bikers on the legal aspects of riding a motorcycle on British roads, the type of licence required, including the necessity of passing a DVLA Compulsory Basic Training test before setting off on the roads.
