Riding hundreds of miles on thin pads is not worth the risk, especially with the steep descents this route includes.
Finally, check your brake fluid. Old fluid absorbs moisture over time, which lowers its boiling point. Fresh DOT 4 fluid has a dry boiling point of around 230°C, but once it has absorbed enough moisture, that figure can drop to around 155°C. On a long, hot descent, this difference is what separates a firm brake lever from a soft, fading one. Most manufacturers recommend changing brake fluid every one to two years regardless of mileage, and a big trip like the NC500 is a good reason to check when yours was last done.

After riding through rain or standing water, a gentle, controlled brake application at low speed helps dry the pads and discs and lets you feel early if something is not responding normally.
